GMM Luton (IBC) outsourcing
We got it so wrong.
For many years the work ethic was based on a fair days work for a fair days pay. Today the work ethic at IBC is cheap labour and less labour. Yet, society says it wants full employment with a living wage for all those that work. There is a huge contradiction here, strive for full employment in an economy that does its best to put people out of work or pay a very unfair wage for a very hard days work.
We in the Trade Union are guilty of signing up to outsourcing agreements which have now resulted in the start of a process that will soon lead to a factory of totally exploited workers where the pay and conditions will see a return to conditions of abuse at the start of the 20th century.
We must get back to the basic recognition that our function is to protect the vulnerable. We definitely must not expect members to pay protection money every month and then sign agreements that cut their throat. To move a dustbin requires the agreement of all shifts before it can be moved but peoples jobs can be given away without any consultation whatsoever with the workers on any shift. Therefore, the trade Union leadership apologises for this gross misconduct inflicted on our members.
We will now leave no avenue unexplored to halt the stench of decay in human decency. Hence we will sincerely seek with all our European Trade Union colleagues to halt this dreadful decline in fair play. Several proposals will be considered for example, lobby the local MPs to call for corporate responsibility that means something real. This may include corporations that pay low wages must make an honest contribution towards education, health care, infrastructure and social services. Their workers have to use these services. Also the huge sums that are paid for family credit means that IBC workers subsidise from income tax GMM Luton to pay low wages.
A constant Trade Union presence 24/7outside Griffin House with placards explaining the current state to the public and the very negative impact on our Town. Marches through the town will certainly focus minds on the deadly terror that GM has in store for it. The Trade Union welcomes ideas that help us all to make a difference in the pursuit of decent treatment for workers and management. It is a guarantee that when the workers go so too will management. Just remember ‘Business case’ means nothing more than cheap labour and job losses but huge profits for the company. It was very foolish of us not to see this much sooner.
