Worldwide GM Action Group to support EEF Strategy
The unions from all GM regions which are represented in the worldwide GM Action Group coordinated by the International Metalworkers' Federation support the EEF solidarity strategy strongly
During the meeting of the worldwide GM Action Group the unions from all GM regions strongly supported the EEF solidarity strategy. To keep all the Delta plants open is important not only for the European workers it is also a prove that fighting back makes a difference. All over the world GM is threatening unions and workers to make concessions and to close down plants. For example the plants in Brazil or in Korea (GM DAT) are facing similar challenges especially regarding relocation of jobs to China and India. Not to mention the worse situation in North America where GM is building new plants in Mexico at the same thime when they are closing down plants in Canada and the US. The participants demonstrated quite clearly that the struggle of the Delta plants, especially in Antwerp is similar to other regions and agreed to deliver real solidarity whenever it is needed. At this point of time it wasquite clear that the Antwerp plant has a guarantee as an assembly plant after the current Astra production is runni ng out. Everybody who really wants to support the Antwerp workers has to support the unions represented in the plant. It is vicious when so-called stalinist "worker representatives" from the bochum plant went to Antwerp and causing a lot of trouble which led to production stops to express their "solidarity". Antwerp is safeguarded by real solidarity given by the EEF, all other plants and European unions which really helped to get the necessary security for survival. Now it is the most important job to reach a conclusion with management how much and what kind of production should be allocated in Antwerp. We all know that the proud Antwerp workers feel that the Management décision is really unfair ignoring the facts that this is the most productive plant with high quality. But let's say the plant is safe in general now. All other issues will be dealt with during the next weeks. And the best for the workers future is to support the unions and the EEF all over Europe but especially in Antwerp. The loss of 1400 jobs planned by GM would even happened when Antwerp would have get the Astra. The reason is the immense increase of productivity for the next generations of cars which is appr. 30 % of the current workforce in every Delta plant which is running a 3-shift operation. Does anybody think you could deal with that by going on strike? Bearing in mind that in times of underutilization a strike is not so much effective, isn't it? or should the unions and workers pay for themselves when GM is laughing that some radicals help to get rid of stocked cars? Would be a dumb strategy. W.
