Tonawanda GM workers approve contract
Autoworkers at the GM Powertrain plant in the Town of Tonawanda approved the UAW contract with 64 percent of those voting in favor of the pact, a union official said today.
Workers voted on the contract until 10 p.m. Monday and the results were being announced to union members today. Specific vote numbers were not being made available until after workers received the news.
Across the country, workers have been voting in favor of the contract by a 60 percent margin, according to published reports.
The contract calls for GM to pay the union a lump sum to take over retiree health care, and for a two-tiered wage scale for some non-production jobs.
UAW Local 774 represents about 1,500 workers at the plant on River Road. Across GM, the UAW represents about 73,000 production workers in the United States.
