Global Action Day against precarious work on October 7, 2008
The International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF), the European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF) and its union affiliates decided to strengthen their campaign against precarious work. The highlight in 2008 will be a "Global Action Day" against precarious work on October 7.
The approach of IMF and its affiliates to precarious work is informed by the following principles:
Union action is essential to counteract the expansion of precarious work, particularly in light of the limitations of institutional channels to resolve complaints.
The EMF is of the opinion that organising this as a joint effort can only increase
the effectiveness of this action day and as such welcomes the IMF decision. The
IMF has now decided on a specific date for this global action day – 7th October 2008 – and sent a first circular letter in this respect to all its affiliated organisations last month. The EMF proposes to work closely together with the IMF on this issue.
Therefore the EMF also proposes 7th October as our joint European action day against precarious employment. As per the proposals resulting from the March meeting of the EMF Collective Bargaining Policy Committee, we intend to use the same slogan as the IMF: “Mobilizing globally against precarious work” and combine this with our EMF Collective Bargaining action logo (i.e. the one used for the 1st Common Demand).
In the coming days, we will coordinate the steps to be taken with the IMF and
will inform you about this in due course.
