Strike at Opel continues
18 April 2007
BRUSSELS – The morning shift at General Motors in Antwerp is today continuing the strike which was called yesterday afternoon, confirms Luc Van Grinsven, representative of the Christian trade union ACV.
The late shift on Tuesday went on strike after unions informed workers that the Antwerp Opel plant would not be building the new Astra model. The plant will also have to cut 1,400 jobs this year.
Unions passed on this information to the morning shift at 6 am this morning. Production is expected to resume in Antwerp at 2 pm, once the strike has lasted 24 hours.
The international conference of trade unions represented at GM Europe will be meeting in Antwerp today through Friday to discuss their strategy.
